Yvonne Sloan, Artist

Yvonne Sloan’s work on SAILS was first exhibited by invitation from the Scottish Arts Council and the Crawford Arts Centre in St. Andrews, Scotland in 1998. The exhibition also toured to Kirkacaldy and Dunfermline in 1999.

The inspiration for the installation was the sail shapes seen in the South Pacific, their simple shapes and the patterns they create when sailing as a fleet or pulled up together on the shore. The installation can be arranged so that one has the feeling of walking through a flotilla.

The individual sails in the installation make reference to the elements of ocean travel such as storms, sunrise and sunset, rainbows and its vastness.

The installation was also seen in NZ for the first time in APRIL 2000 at the NZ Academy of Fine Arts, Queens Wharf Wellington.
